O'Brien Soaker 1-Person Towable Tube

O'Brien Soaker 1-Person Towable Tube

The afternoon sun beat down, reflecting off the deceptively placid lake. I was watching a family grapple with a frankly ridiculous inflatable, a three-person monstrosity with a cartoon shark plastered on its side. It was getting thrashed. Watching it slowly deflate after repeated near-misses with the wake… well, it reminded me why I favor simplicity. My gaze then drifted over to the O’Brien Soaker, the single-person tube I’d brought along, just waiting for its turn.

My personal preference for this style is a function of experience. Towables are, at their core, about control. The more weight you’re hauling, the less maneuverability you have. Forget about any kind of carving or creative play. This single-person model, however, offers a different kind of experience. You’re not simply along for the ride; you’re actively engaged.

I’ll concede: the initial setup isn’t exactly intuitive. Some of these things, particularly cheaper models, struggle with the inflation valve design. But, once you’ve wrestled the air pump into position and secured the Boston valve—make sure it’s a proper seal—the Soaker’s tough, PVC-coated nylon construction really shines. It holds its shape like a champ, resisting punctures and tears even after prolonged abuse. And it’s crucial to consider the tube’s overall design: The recessed seating area and strategically placed grab handles contribute to a secure and comfortable ride.

Now, I do have a slight gripe. The tow rope attachment point could be a bit more reinforced, especially if you’re prone to high-speed antics. That’s probably the only area where I’d rate it slightly lower than, say, the heavy-duty Airhead line. However, it’s easily remedied. A simple rope protector, readily available online, can bolster the connection point and extend the tube’s lifespan. Problem solved.

So, who is the O’Brien Soaker for? It’s the choice for the individual, the serious rider who wants a responsive, controllable tube. It’s for the person who appreciates quality, durability and, let’s be honest, a bit of personal space on the water. If you’re a seasoned watersports enthusiast, or someone seeking a fun and responsive entry point, the Soaker’s your go-to. Go ahead; buy it. You won’t regret the investment.
